Berlin is world renowned for its nightlife – and for good reason. The unique venues and manic club scene attract tens of thousands of tourists every year. The city is the European home of techno and its ever changing club scene keeps the nightlife fresh and exciting. The more popular clubs are located in East Berlin and housed in abandoned buildings and derelict factories. This provides clubs with grimy atmospheres and cavernous dance floors. Clubs such as Watergate, Cookies and Berghain are known as being amongst the best in Europe. However, because of their popularity they have notoriously strict door policies. It is not unusual to wait three hours in a queue just to be turned away at the door. If you are lucky enough to be allowed in you will be rewarded with world class DJ’s and chaotic raves that go on till well into the morning. Be aware that many Berlin clubs have designated dark rooms where adventurous clubbers can get to know each other more intimately. To find out what is happening where in city you should check the Exberliner magazine. The publication is in English and lists pretty much everything that is worth knowing about. If you are not in the mood for dancing you can always explore Berlin’s expansive bar scene. The city has everything from trendy cocktail bars and artsy venues to cellar bars and dingy rock clubs. You can sample the large selection of wine at Die Weinerei for just 2€ plus tip, or knock back absinthe shots from a test-tube at the gothic horror bar, Last Cathedral. Traditional German beer gardens can also be found in Berlin and are a great place to laze in the afternoon sun. The same can be said of the many beach bars that are dotted upon the riverbanks. These artificial beaches are set up with deckchairs, palm trees, bars and kitchens. The city also has numerous live music venues which cater for everything from avant-garde jazz to hardcore punk rock. This wide variation in nightlife, and usually cheap prices, makes Berlin a boozing backpacker’s dream – the hazy memories will last you a lifetime.
