Berlin’s sprawling landscape is peppered intermittently with “plätzen” or ‘squares’, each one bearing name to a colorful historic past. Rosenthaler Platz is certainly no exception. It forms the meeting point of five streets, and lies at the center of the wonderfully energetic district of Mitte, the very heart of modern Berlin.

In the seventeenth century it was the location of one the great gates into the city. In the eighteenth century it was surrounded by vineyards and witnessed the efforts of many industrious farmers and winemakers. One century later it gained notoriety for the many unsavory enterprises that prospered in its neighborhood. It also used to be known for the thriving Jewish community that flourished here, until the Nazis came to power.

Today, Rosenthaler Platz is the site of many unique cafes, boutiques and artists workshops. The imaginative ‘Museum of Stickers’ is a moment’s walk away and interior accessories designer ‘S.Wert’ is located on Brunnenstrasse. The idiosyncratic neighborhood attracted many artists and intellectuals and still supports a cast of bohemian street artists, thinkers and designers today.

In June, the neighborhood honors its assorted inhabitants of artists, musicians and academics, with the ‘Rosentag Kultur und Nachbarschaftsfest` or ‘Culture and Neigbourood festival’, where free recitals by musicians and poets and performance artists take place in the open. In April 2010, the iconic square was submitted to a phenomenal display, dubbed the ‘Farbattacke!’ or ‘Color Attack!’ . A group of cyclists’ poured many gallons of brightly colored paint onto the crossroads to create a spontaneous kaleidoscopic canvas of color, as vehicles and pedestrians traversed the rainbow roads.

With U-Bahn Rosenthaler Platz on its doorstep and so much to see, it makes a great location for visitors to the city to stopover. The legendary Circus Hostel is located just off the square on Weinsbergweg Strasse , and the eccentric Wurst 22 restaurant serves some of the finest sausages in the city. For all your caffeinated needs, drop into to the effortlessly cool ‘Mien Haus am See’ where you can browse through the bizarrely eclectic library and lounge undisturbed at any time of day or night, on the comfortable art-deco sofas. Be sure to pay this colorful corner of Berlin a visit. It’s surely the gateway to some of Berlin’s most interesting offerings.
